About the Author

Juanita Davies is an award-winning instructor who taught anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology in various health care disciplines. She also has written extensively on the subject of medical terminology. Her early work includes A PROGRAMMED LEARNING APPROACH TO MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY and an online medical terminology test bank containing 15,000 questions. Her first book with Cengage -- MODERN MEDICAL LANGUAGE -- is a high-level text comprising anatomy, medical terminology, pathology, signs and symptoms, diagnostic procedures, and treatment. Her second -- ESSENTIALS OF MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY -- is an anatomy and medical terminology text with a complexity level that is suitable for two-semester terminology courses as well as adaptable to one-semester courses. Her third -- A QUICK REFERENCE TO MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY -- is a useful medical terminology handbook that can also be used as a very inexpensive terminology text. It has been bundled with anatomy and physiology texts to form a comprehensive single text. Her fourth book -- AN ILLUSTRATED GUIDE TO MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY -- is particularly suitable for today's visual learners with its focus on comprehensive illustrations and writing directed at those illustrations. Although both are comprehensive, ILLUSTRATED has a different delivery style than ESSENTIALS.

Medical Terminology Systems: A Body Systems Approach

The med term approaches and how they differ Most med terms books teach by memorization the whole word approach. Memorize vocabulary and then try to recognize word patterns. Gylys uses the word-building approach. First learn the patterns of medical words before you learn the vocabulary.

Why does word-building work? It begins with the basics Gylys takes a common sense approach, by introducing word elements first: Roots Combining forms Suffixes Prefixes She covers them one by one, breaking down each word part. Common English word elements are presented This familiarity makes it easier for students to learn and break apart and build words.

Students can use their understanding of word parts to decipher vocabulary. Mnemonic devices, interactive activities (in the book and on the CD) make word-building fun and this in turn increases retention no more tedious memorization, students learn by breaking down and rebuilding words From my years of teaching, I found it was much easier for students to learn word parts directly associated with a body system (or specialty area), and this has been the key to my approach in all of my texts and software products.

Medical Terminology Systems 7th Edition

As medical terminology educators, we face common challenges. First, we must present a vast amount of fairly complex information to students of various learning levels and abilities. Second, we need to impress upon them the importance of medical terminology as an essential tool of communication in the health-care industry. Finally, we must help them apply what they have learned to the “real world of medicine.”

Building on the success of the sixth edition, which received the prestigious McGuffey Longevity and Excellence Award from the Textbook Authors’ Association (TAA), Medical Terminology Systems: A Body Systems Approach, 7th edition, continues to live up to its well-established track record of presenting medical word-building principles based on competency-based curricula. Because of the pedagogical success of previous editions, the seventh edition continues its structural design as a textbook–workbook that complements all teaching formats, including traditional lecture, distance learning, and independent or self-paced study.

The popular, basic features of the previous edition have been enhanced and expanded. The body systems chapters have been updated to include new diagnostic and therapeutic procedures as well as new pharmaceutical agents in current use. Many new, visually impressive, full-color illustrations have been added to this edition. Artwork throughout the book is specifically designed to present accurate and aesthetically pleasing representations of anatomical structures, disease conditions, and medical procedures.

Illustrations augment course content in new and interesting ways and help make difficult concepts clear. Two new learning activities have been incorporated in each body-system chapter.
