Tissue: is defined as group of cells of similarity in structure, function and genesis. Tissues provide the numerous functions of organs necessary to maintain biological life. The study of tissues is called histology, and is important to the understanding of how the human body is able to function as a unit.
The English word is derived from the French tissu, meaning something that is woven, from the verb tisser, "to weave". A tissue is a group of cells that have a similar shape and function. Different types of tissues can be found in different organs. In humans, there are four basic types of tissue: epithelial, connective, muscular, and nervous tissue. There may be various sub-tissues within each of the primary tissues.
